ANTI-PORNOGRAPHY COMMITEE

The Annual "WHITE RIBBON AGAINST PORNOGRAPHY" Campaign starts The last Sunday in October to the first Sunday in November, but do check to make sure of the official dates. In reviewing many articles on the White Ribbon Campaign, here is some help for Diocesan Unions of Holy Name Societies and parish Holy Name Societies with ideas in promoting the White Ribbon Campaign on the HNS fight against pornography.

.

Why a White Ribbon?

It's a Symbol

Since 1988
, the white ribbon has been the symbol of a nationwide anti-pornography movement. By displaying a white ribbon, you are saying you care and you count in the fight against hard-core pornography and for decency in the media. Display the ribbon on your car antenna; or on the doorknocker of your home or store. Decorate your church, synagogue or mosque with ribbons, bows and posters.

It's a Standard

The white ribbons set a standard for decency in your community. With community consensus regarding what is obscene, law enforcement officials, judges, juries and politicians will know that hard-core pornography, in any medium, is NOT tolerated in your community.

It's a Solution

By mobilizing hundreds of thousands of people like you, the white ribbon paves the way for a solution to the problem of illegal, hard-core pornography and indecency in media. Our grass-roots effort is public, peaceful and powerful. Take the momentum of public awareness generated during this campaign and channel it into increased public action designed to make your community porn free!

.
  • Ask that pastors place notices in church bulletins about this campaign to the effect that we as Catholics must constantly wage a battle against pornography which is designed to destroy the moral fiber of our society. Ribbons should be distributed at Masses on the final weekend of October. Families should display the ribbons on their cars during the campaign week.

Parish men designated to help with this campaign can purchase white ribbons from any local stores if the parish group chooses to do so. [NOTE: White ribbons may also be ordered from Berwick Industries, PO Box 428, Berwick, PA 18603, 800-237-9425.
  •
  • Display White Ribbons all week. Put White Ribbons everywhere. Your lapel, car, mailbox, front door, flag poles, wherever. People will see the White Ribbon and ask you why you're wearing it, or why you're displaying it. Tell them.
  •
  • Request your Governor, Mayor, state and local legislators to proclaim "Pornogrpahy Awareness Week" in your community.
  •
  • Ask the local clergy to preach against pornography. Priests, ministers, rabbis need to proclaim from the pulpit that a life lived with God and a life absorbed in porn do not go together.
  •
  • Organize a meeting in your community at which knowledgeable speakers can inform the community about the dangers of pornography and how to combat it.
  •
  • Write complaint letters to local distributors of videos and magazines.
  •
  • Support businesses that don't carry porn; write them and thank them.
