October

Background
In October of 2001, the Pennsylvania Association of the Holy
Name Society (PAHNS) decided to seek a future National Holy Name
Convention for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Philadelphia
Archdiocesan Holy Name Union (PAHNU) was selected as the host
for the 2007 National Holy Name Convention, by the National Association
of the Holy Name Society (NAHNS). The NAHNS Executive Board made
this decision at its Spring Board Meeting in St. Louis, in April
of this year. Cardinal Bevilacqua has been notified that Philadelphia's
invitation was accepted, and he has pledged full
cooperation in this venture.
The Convention Committee has already held two meetings, on June
15th and September 21st respectively. Our June meeting was of
a preliminary, organizational nature, during which the Chair
outlined the tasks involved in hosting a National Convention.
Your review of the enclosed "Volunteer Form" will give
you a good idea of the scope of activities involved.
Our September meeting was more substantive: we chose "Faithful
Followers of Jesus: Following in the Footsteps of Blessed John
of Vercelli" as our Convention Theme, and selected the Radisson
Hotel Valley Forge as our Convention Hotel. On Tuesday, October
8th, the Chair signed the contract, and forwarded a token deposit
to the hotel to secure our space.
Our next Convention Meeting will be held on Saturday, December
21st, at Holy Name of Jesus Parish, Berks and Gaul Sts., Philadelphia,
PA. The meeting will begin at 1:30 PM, immediately after the
Archdiocesan Holy Name Union Meeting.
The Convention will be a four day affair, beginning at Noon on
Thursday, September 6th, and ending Sunday morning, September
9th, 2007. We may consider the possibility of holding Pre-Convention
and Post-Convention workshops, on Wednesday, September 5th, and
Sunday, September 9th, respectively, if there is sufficient interest.
We have already assembled the nucleus of a Convention Committee,
but are looking for additional volunteers. Please review the
Volunteer Form enclosed, and, if you are interested in serving,
please return it to me. While the primary responsibility will
fall upon Holy Name members in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia,
volunteers from the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are welcome,
especially for sub-committees such as Program, where we will
be seeking to sell advertising throughout the entire state.
